Since we were little girls, playing with our dolls, teddies and imaginary friends, we have managed to come up with all sorts of weird and wonderful names. But when it comes to expecting your own real life baby – the pressure is really on to give this child a name that has to fulfill various important criteria.
Where do you start? Firstly, this name has got to have longevity. It cannot just be a cute ‘babyish’ name – fast forward a few years and ask yourself how ‘Pixie’ or ‘Phoenix’ will it sound on the rugby pitch or in the board room?
Secondly, it has to flow easily with the surname. It has to have an element of ‘cool’ and an element of sophistication without it looking like you have tried too hard. And if you are going to go for the unusual and almost made up baby name, then bear in mind that your child might forever have to spell it out and and correct other people's pronunciation.
So, the baby is arriving soon, you have had countless arguments about the shortlist. Do you go for traditional baby names, funky baby names, unusual baby names, surnames for first names, boys names for girls names, girls names for boys names, made up baby names, baby names that sound like addresses or celebrity baby names? HELP!

You really have found something unusual, special, not overly flamboyant and you can just imagine yourself calling out this name in the park and feeling rather proud of being the parent of a child with such a lovely name.
You decide to tell your best friend your good news and she gives you a faint smile, and just ever so slightly, turns her nose up…
